Hi Shane,
I'll have to get back to you tomorrow - it's past midnight here now. But in the meantime, try this.

Deinstall the STM32 USB serial device in device manager.
Turning everything off.
Turn the rig on first and then the PC - this should force a re-install of the drivers.
Wait 15 minutes
Now check the device manager.
If there are no errors at all indicated - that start WSJTx and see if it is also happy or whether it still displays the same error message as before.

Another thought - is the shorter USB cable going directly to the PC. You are not connecting via a hub, are you? Sometimes those can cause the IO error problem.

Is the IO error message displayed in Device manager or in WSJTx?

I'm plugging the radio directly into the computer, no USB hub. All previous error messages have come from WSJT-X.

I got a new error from Windows about an unrecognized USB device when I started the computer. During boot I could hear a relay in the radio click-click-click, pause, and click-click-click again. Logged into Windows. Waited 15 minutes. When I checked device manager I've got an unknown device. I let it sit for another hour and still have the unknown device. I right clicked to update driver from internet and it says the current driver is correct.

Hi Shane,
That clicking sound is a good sign. It proves the USB cable is working, unfortunately, what it also tells me (I think) is that you have the wrong driver installed.
Believe it or not, when Windows says, the best available driver is already installed (hence I won't install a different one) often means that it has a Microsoft certified driver that it is using - this may not be the correct one for the hardware though.

The "install/setup" process only ever puts the driver files in the correct directories, ready for installation but then relies on Windows to do an auto-install at the next startup. If Windows thinks the other driver files that it has are "better" it will never install the files we want unless we do it manually.

I don't have the X108G connected to my laptop at the moment but I hope I can list the steps needed by looking at my IC7300 connection (which is using an MS certified driver and so is OK with automatic installation however I should still be able to do a manual install anyway).

Here goes:

Open device manager
You must be registered for see images attach

Right click on the comm device that you think is the link to the X108G (here I'm using the IC-7300 link)
Now select "update driver"
You must be registered for see images attach

select "Browse my computer for driver software"
You must be registered for see images attach

Now click on the "let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"

You must be registered for see images attach

In my case I only have one driver available.

I hope on your PC it shows more than one - the shaded one will be the one that is currently in use - select the other one and then press "next" and "close".
You will be returned to the device manager and if we are lucky, the "unknown device" in the list will now be called STM32 or something and have moved up to the Ports (COM & LPT) section and not show any yellow triangle or other marks.

See how you go and let me know.
